Vertical Aerospace is building technology to revolutionise how people fly with a vision of electric flight for everyone.

We are currently entering a phase of rapid expansion with the objective of rapidly bringing competitive products to market and are looking for a Head of Flight Physics to grow and develop our world class Flight Physics function. You will lead research, methods development, design and certification activities to ensure the flight characteristics and performance of our products will enable us to achieve our mission.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic capability development across aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, aeroelastics, flight performance, flight dynamics and control
  • Lead a team of highly skilled direct reports to develop aircraft concepts and deliver detailed designs for manufacture
  • Development of team strategy
  • Setting team and individual objectives
  • Resource management, planning, recruitment and outsourcing
  • Definition of process, methods and tools in line with EASA Part 21J requirements
  • Manage relationships with key external stakeholders, including the certification authorities, engineering outsource providers, academic research establishments, government funding bodies, partners and suppliers
  • Work closely with the Chief Engineering and Airworthiness departments to establish requirements for aircraft flight characteristics and performance and coordinate activities to ensure these are met
  • Identify technology and capability opportunities, support their development and delivery to the Chief Engineering department in order to ensure the competitiveness of the company’s products
  • Prepare and submit reports to senior management in all matters of importance

  • The delivery of design activities within a regulated environment, preferably an aerospace background

Experience of the following is desired

  • Aerodynamic testing
  • Flight testing
  • Control systems development
  • Rapid design development using modelling and simulation
  • Understanding of aircraft configuration, design requirements and system engineering methodologies is desired
  • Knowledge of Part 21J certification processes and requirements is desired
  • Held signatory to DOA aviation levels is desired
