Battery Systems Engineer

We’re looking for a Battery Systems Engineer to focus on the development and integration of bespoke battery systems to power our aircraft.

You will work with our suppliers and engineers to ensure an optimised integrated system; bring best practice and innovation to this fast paced design and build environment.

You’ll ideally have experience delivering programmes throughout the entire lifecycle and an Aerospace or automotive background with both theoretical and hands-on experience.


Your duties will be wide ranging and varied and will include:

  • Battery system architecture design
  • Integration of battery systems within vehicle and powertrain projects
  • Compliance definition to relevant Aerospace standards
  • Definition of test requirements for both flight ready and experimental systems
  • Outsourced work package management
  • Assistance in the manufacture and testing of prototypes, both full and part scale
  • Certification activities, including the definition of requirements and the execution of the associated test
  • Support battery electrical design, mechanical design, modelling and simulation activities
  • Presenting complex system information in an understandable way to different levels of the business

Basic Qualifications / Experience

  • 5-10 years experience, with the majority in Battery system design and development
  • Bachelors or higher Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline
  • Experience of energy storage systems as well as high level electrical and mechanical system design
  • Proficiency in defining equipment specifications and external work packages
  • Knowledge of design requirements for battery systems
  • Working knowledge of the design and operation of BMS
  • Experience in communicating with stakeholders, as well as technical and business teams to collect requirements, describe product features and technical designs
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of battery technology including:
    • Prevalent cell chemistries (performance and lifetime characteristics)
    • Design (key parameters of module and pack level packaging
    • Mechanical, thermal, wiring and sensing)
    • Failure modes, manufacturing and assembly
    • supply base and market landscape
    • Applicable industry standards
    • Best practices and regulations
    • System interfaces
    • Testing/validation methods

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Experience of certification to Aerospace standards
  • Knowledge of current and developing Electric Vehicle and Aircraft technologies
