The Battery Management System(BMS) engineer will be responsible for the design and development of Battery Management System (BMS), the hardware involved for instrumentation and control of batteries and the software utilised for integration into Vertical Aerospace aircraft. This position requires extensive knowledge of advanced battery management systems, and accompanied hardware and software for prototype and certification programmes. This includes new products developed using internal BMS hardware and software expertise as well as overseeing the application software feature development and functional safety aspects of supplier deliverables.

Job Responsibilities

  • Management and execution of BMS development projects and new product development in BMS area
  • Creation of BMS hardware and software design specifications and product software for in-house BMS projects, through to certification ready BMS systems
  • Management of internal and external resources for BMS Application SW and Base SW development
  • Integration and validation into the aircraft, supporting colleagues as needed and perform design review with ECU suppliers for BMS hardware development, including DFMEA, FTA, FMEDA etc
  • Lead the development of BMS electronic controls functional safety for production programs
  • Lead implementation of functional safety processes according to Vertical Aerospace design processes, working with battery pack suppliers for both system level and hardware/software level design review for safety critical functions related to BMS solutions
  • Oversee the Battery State Estimation (SOC, SOP, SOH) function and the production battery pack development programs with suppliers and MIL/HIL/Pack/Vehicle level validation
  • Creation and management of battery characterisation and parameterisation method and process, battery diagnostic function development, algorithm development and software validation
  • Identification and tracking the specific assignments, deliverables, and provide an assessment on the progress and outcome of the work on a day-to-day basis

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Systems, or Computer Engineering or related engineering field (Chemistry degree with relevant engineering experience considered)
  • 10 years in Product engineering design and development
  • 5 years of experience developing automotive based ECU software and/or hardware
  • Strong knowledge of ISO26262 / DO-160 standards, practice and process
  • Proficient with Model based software development process and layered software architecture
  • Proficient with ECU hardware and software development methodology, process, and tool chains
  • Strong technical project management skills and support management level presentations and project overviews
  • Strong technical, verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • High Voltage training and advance battery design/development experience is desirable
  • Battery cell electrochemistry understanding and knowledge of battery state estimation algorithms
  • C/C++/Python programming experience
