Vertical Aerospace is building technology to revolutionise how people fly. Our mission is to make air travel personal, on-demand and carbon-free.

We’re looking for a Stress Engineer to be part of a small team of high caliber designers focused on vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft.

You will work on the design and verification of complex aircraft structures, test rigs and support structures. The results from which will be reported and communicated in such a way as to allow the demonstration of compliance with the relevant structural requirements.

You will be skilled in both traditional hand calculations and finite element analysis.

Responsibilities

Your duties will be wide ranging and varied and will include:

  • Carrying out static Finite Element Analysis
  • Performing hand calculations using established methods
  • Actively contributing to design concepts to ensure structural requirements can be met at an early stage
  • Supporting the definition of component and system requirements
  • Creation or modification of CAD geometries to support FEA activities
  • Contributing to reports to support meeting the Means of Compliance standards required by the authorities
  • Assisting in the management of suppliers and manufacturers, delivering components or systems to the project
  • Assisting in related R&D projects and support test activity
  • Preparing technical documentation
  • Assisting with the build and fault-finding of the project
  • Working closely with design engineers, CFD engineers and systems engineers to optimise designs and ensure requirements can be met
  • Delivering stress reports and calculation notes to support project timescales
  • Preparation of test request notes and support of related test activities
  • Review of calculations and reports created by other team members

Basic Qualifications / Experience

  • Educated to degree level or higher in Aeronautical/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • 3+ years of experience working in a relevant industrial environment
  • Sound knowledge of air vehicle structures
  • Both composite and metallic stress analysis experience
  • Experienced user of Finite Element Analysis
  • Awareness of processes and requirements relevant to the certification of aircraft
  • Passionate about technology and thrive in a dynamic environment where flexibility is essential
  • Communicate complex ideas so that they are understood by different audiences
  • Fluent in spoken and written English

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Experience working with both rotorcraft and fixed wing aircraft
  • Experience of fatigue analysis
  • Experience of dynamic analysis
  • Previously involved in structural test programmes
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to professional development
