Vertical Aerospace is building technology to revolutionise how people fly. Our mission is to make air travel personal, on-demand and carbon-free.

We are currently entering a phase of rapid expansion with the objective of rapidly bringing competitive product(s) to market. As part of this expansion we are looking for a Head of Test to lead a multi-disciplinary team of highly skilled engineers in all test activities. This includes the management of sub-system testing, system tests rig development through to aircraft certification flight testing.


Your duties will be wide ranging and varied and will include:

  • Building a world-class test function, responsible for:
    • - Recruitment and outsourcing
    • - Development of team capabilities
    • - Definition of process, methods and tools in line with EASA Part 21J requirements
  • Leading a team of highly skilled engineers to develop system and aircraft level test strategies aimed at expanding the envelope our capabilities and progressing our vehicles from experimental development through to certification flight testing. Activities supporting this include:
    • - Development of company test strategy and associated test programmes
    • - Setting team and individual objectives
    • - Resource management and load / capacity planning
  • Working closely with the other engineering departments to ensure all test requirements are captured
  • Performing flight test planning, flight readiness reviews, flight briefs/debriefs, acting as test director during test execution and performing post flight data analysis
  • Working with our simulation team to expand our flight simulator capability and fidelity
  • Completing all required documentation in accordance with established company and EASA procedures
  • Managing ground operations, flight test modifications, preflight checks, ground observer responsibilities, and post flight inspections
  • Supporting the development of flight manuals and supporting documentation necessary to operate the vehicles
  • Being responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices
  • Writing and submitting reports to senior management as required

Basic Qualifications / Experience

  • Experience leading sub-system, system and aircraft level experimental testing as well as certification flight tests
  • Leadership of multiple teams in a creative, dynamic and delivery focused environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with colleagues across a wide range of technical disciplines
  • A pro-active and systematic approach to problem solving
  • Previous engagement and management of critical partnerships and suppliers
  • Experience leading multiple projects across multiple working sites
  • Experience in the development and definition of process, methods and tools
  • The delivery of test activities within a certification environment, preferably an aerospace background with knowledge of Part 21J
  • Data analysis experience using tools like Matlab, Python or similar
  • Previously a signatory holder within a DOA
