Vertical Aerospace is building technology to revolutionise how people fly. Our mission is to make air travel personal, on-demand and carbon-free.

We are currently entering a phase of rapid expansion with the objective of rapidly bringing competitive product(s) to market. As part of this expansion we are looking for a Head of Aircraft Architecture to lead a multi-disciplinary team of highly skilled specialists in all aircraft level system activities. These activities range from aircraft concept trade studies and competitor analysis through to design, build and certification.

Responsibilities

Your duties will be wide ranging and varied and will include:

  • Build a world-class aircraft architectures function, responsible for:
    • recruitment and outsourcing
    • development of team capabilities
    • definition of process, methods and tools in line with EASA Part 21J requirements
  • Lead a team of highly skilled engineers to develop aircraft concepts and manage the aircraft complete life cycle. This includes managing the definition of initial aircraft requirements, system design, V&V, entry into service as well as in service fleet support. Activities supporting this include:
    • Development of team strategy
    • Definition and management of requirements throughout the V&V lifecycle of the aircraft development
    • Setting team and individual objectives
    • Resource management and load / capacity planning
  • Lead aircraft level engineering activities with key external stakeholders, including; the certification authorities, engineering outsource providers, academic research establishments, government funding bodies, partners and suppliers
  • Work closely with the Chief Engineering department to ensure the aircraft architecture function is effective
  • Identify technology and capability opportunities and develop and deliver these to the Chief Engineer department in order to ensure the competitiveness of the company‚Äôs products
  • Write and submit reports to senior management in all matters of importance

Basic Qualifications / Experience

  • Leadership of multiple teams in a creative, dynamic and delivery focused environment
  • A detailed understand of overall aircraft architecture to be able to evaluate aircraft concepts and run trade review
  • An ability to manage aircraft attributes and the cascade of requirements through the V&V cycle
  • A systems engineering mindset and have experience in system integration and optimisation
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Experience of configuration management and PLM systems
  • A pro-active and systematic approach to problem solving
  • The engagement and management of critical partnerships and suppliers
  • Leadership of multiple projects across multiple working sites
  • Development of technology roadmaps to meet company strategic deliverables
  • Development and definition of process, methods and tools
  • The delivery of design activities within a certification environment, preferably an aerospace background with knowledge of Part 21J
  • Knowledge of Part 21J certification processes and requirements is desired
  • Previously a signatory holder within a DOA is desired
